Solar Water Pump Installation

1. Site Survey and Requirement Analysis

  • Assess water source type: borewell, open well, or surface water

  • Measure:

    • Water depth (Total Dynamic Head)

    • Flow rate required (litres per day or per hour)

    • Sunlight availability

  • Choose between:

    • Submersible pump – for deep borewells

    • Surface pump – for shallow sources

2. System Design & Sizing

  • Determine solar panel capacity based on:

    • Pump wattage (e.g., 1 HP, 3 HP, 5 HP, etc.)

    • Water output needs

  • Select controller (DC/AC), panel mounting structure, cables, etc.

  • Battery backup may be included (optional, mostly not needed in agriculture).

3. Foundation and Structure Setup

  • Construct a strong RCC or metal base for mounting solar panels.

  • Use a south-facing tilt angle (as per location) for maximum sun exposure.

  • Install galvanized mounting structure to hold solar panels securely.

4. Solar Panel Installation

  • Fix solar panels on the mounting frame.

  • Connect panels in series or parallel, based on voltage/current requirement.

  • Ensure proper earthing and lightning protection (especially in open fields).

5. Pump Installation

  • Submersible pumps are lowered inside the borewell with safety rope and pipe fittings.

  • Surface pumps are connected at ground level near the water source.

  • All pipe joints must be leak-proof and properly secured.

6. Electrical Connections

  • Connect solar panels to the pump controller (MPPT or VFD)

  • Controller is then connected to the pump motor.

  • Use weather-proof and high-quality cables.

  • Install MCBs and safety fuses for protection.

7. System Testing and Commissioning

  • Check:

    • Solar input voltage and current

    • Motor operation under sunlight

    • Water output pressure and flow

  • Run test during peak sunlight to confirm performance.
